lives in the garden
I was sad to hear that the artist Jan Johnson passed away in 2011. I was a fan of the man, and of his work. I had the pleasure to meet him ten years ago, and photograph his back yard sculpture garden. In my brief interactions with Jan, he was a generous and interesting man. A Vietnam vet, whose experiences in the war influenced his work. Much love to his widow, organic farmer Mary Alice.

moments of ballet class
To better understand the Victoria Academy of Ballet before starting their visual design, I visited a small class, met the students, witnessed the training, snapped some images.

promotion for a school of grace
The building of this booklet actually spanned a few months. We explored the library of existing photographs, took new photographs, wordsmithed the language, experimented with a couple dozen variations of the logo.
Some of the working drafts had stronger photography and visual design, in my opinion. But our aim wasn’t to make a visual design showpiece, our aim was to favour the photos...

studio visit : Montréal's écorce
I had the pleasure to hang out at Montréal’s écorce studio last month, visiting friends (co-owners) Karl and Véronique, and their team, as they worked late nights and weekends, designing for Montreal’s cinema festival, among other projects.
It’s a sweet space, and the team has focussed energy (made me nostalgic for the larger on-site team we used to have here at Rocketday)....

This morning I woke at my brother-in-law’s place, propping myself up on his sofa to continue plugging away at the current project’s web code, extending and customizing WordPress with lots of PHP and some MySQL. After a few hours it was time for break. Took the kids up into the forest at Grouse Mountain. I joined Sofia and Astrid in pretending we were archers, fighting off an army in...
me : I’m so tired I think I’m going to cry.
Valentina (my neighbour, age 8) : oh good! then I can see the river of tears!
Astrid (my daughter, age 8) : is there really a river called the river of tears?

a daily work formula
Rocketday is doing quite well. However, this means I often find myself under an avalanche of competing project timelines, an ever-growing email inbox, social media messages and phone calls. If I’m not careful, I can easily spend the whole day responding to email as it comes in, jumping between 10 different random projects, never finding the time to give them the devoted focus they need in...
